VALUE to the CORE

He giggled mischievously as he put his tiny finger into my nose.
I brushed his hand away, opened my eyes and gave him a look, the look that said, “really?!?” His smile widened, a cheshire grin so taut that every one of his tiny teeth were showing, and then he giggled even harder so that his entire body jiggled.
I closed my eyes hoping he would understand that I wanted sleep. He did it again and again and again. He got his older brother to join in.
It was a game, and a fun one. The “How much can I annoy my mom” game.
At only one year old, he has an innate trait driving him to extreme enjoyment when getting others to react. He likes to get other people to laugh or squeal.
He pulled hair as a little baby; he put all kinds of random things on his head as a hat; and now, he puts fingers up other people’s noses. Anything to get a reaction.
Each of my children are vastly different in personality. Two of the five seem to share this trait of enjoying instigating reactions, influencing others.
Influencers hold a lot of power over other people. Therefore, we have to teach these children their power and support their learning of how to use the character quality in positive ways.
Jesus tells us that “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
As a business owner, it is critical to set core values to follow. Jim Collin’s book Good to Great says that successful companies like Sony, Disney and General Electric have an underlying set of core values that do not change. Everything else, like strategies, practices and structures are on the table for change, but the values remain the same.
Standing on these values when making business decisions allows you and your employees the freedom to always work within the bounds of the reputation that you want to set. The boundaries of such values supports customer relationships translating into better experiences, trust and satisfaction.
